Location
It is situated in Samalkot town at a distance of about 11 kilometers to the North of Kakinada in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh and is on the Chennai - Howrah broad gauge railway line of South - Central Railway. Samalkot is a Town north-east of Rajahmundry in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh in south India, about 150km north of Vishakhapatnam and is on the rail line between Madras and Calcutta. The nearest city (10 km) is Kakinada, the nearest air strip (40 miles) is Rajahmundhry and the nearest airport (100 miles) is Visakhapatnam (Vizag). |
History
It is believed that this Sivalinga was owned by the Asura King Tarakasura. No one could win over him due to the power of this Sivalinga. With the request from Devas ,finally Lord Kumaraswamy broke the Sivalinga into five pieces and killed Tarakasura. The five pieces of Sivalinga were taken to five different places on earth by Indra, Surya, Chandra, Lord Vishnu and Lord Kumaraswamy. This Linga is one of the five piece brought and installed by Lord Kumaraswamy.It is similar to the temple in Draksharamam, but is also very unique in its own right, such as the linga being white. This Linga is a Lime Stone, 14 feet high. |
