History

When Ganga river flowed from Heaven into the Earth, Lord Shiva accepted it on his head. When the lord accepted it on his head, he did not leave it to flow down. So, Ganga got enraged and made Lord Shiva's body cool. Angered by this, Lord Shiva tied his hairs along with Ganga river. For many years, Ganga performed penance living in Lord Shiva's hairs. Due to Bhagirath's penance, Ganga came to Earth and became the wife of Samudra. Once, all the Devas were worshipping Lord Brahma in his abode. Ganga and Samudra also went there. Due to the force of wind, Ganga's part of her sari blew up. All the Devas bent their heads except Sage Mahabhish. Lord Brahma insulted the sage and pushed him to the Earth. Samudra also cursed Ganga to live in Mrutyu Lok. Ganga requested Lord Brahma. Brahma instructed her to worship the Shivalinga situated to the south of Shipra river in Mahakal forest. Ganga worshipped Gangeshwar Mahadev along with her friend Shipra. She got rid of her curse and Samudra also accepted her. Whoever worships this Linga, will attain the result of visiting all the holy places and will reach Heaven after death.
