History

Mother Earth Bhoomidevi prayed to Lord Maha Vishnu to marry her which Lord obliged and had her as his consort. This was not acceptable to Mother Mahalakshmi and left the Lord. She came to this Shenbagavanam and took on a severe penance to get back her Lord. Lord Vishnu and Bhoomidevi came in search of Mahalakshmi. Brahamma followed in search of Lord Vishnu. They found Mother Mahalakshmi here and prayed to Lord Shiva. By the grace of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu had both Lakshmi and Bhoodevi as his consorts. Lord Brahmma, Lord Vishnu, Mother Mahalakshmi and Sage Agasthya had worshipped in this temple. One elephant, searching for its calf damaged an anthill of ants. They bit the elephant and killed it. Both prayed to Lord Shiva and attained salvation here.

Architecture

This is one of the Mada temples built by Kochenganan. As the three eyes of Lord Shiva, the place has three Shiva temples. The right eye of the Lord is Viswanatha Visalakshi temple, the second left is with Lord Brahmapureeswarar with Mother Perianayaki and the third forehead is for Lord Vaikalnathar with Mother Kombial Kothai. Lord Shiva in the temple is a swayambumurthy. But only two temples are left intact. Vaikal Maadakkovil refers to two shrines, Vaikal and Maadakkovil. Komaleswarar and Ilankothai Amman are worshipped in the Maadakkovil. Vaikalnathar (Shenbaga Aranyeswarar) and Kombial Kothai (Shaka Komalavalli) are worshipped in the Vaikal. Thala Vriksham is Shenbagam and Theertham is Shenbaga theertham. Other deities seen in the temple, as we go around the prakaram, are Vinayakar, Murugan, Varadaraja Perumal, Gaja Lakshmi, Bairavar and Sooriyan in different sanctums. Though highly praised in the hymns of saints, presently the temple is in a bad and dilapidated condition.
