When there did not exist any life, a Linga was formed on its own in Mahakal forest. Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu started to fight on "who is the creator of this world?" Then they heard the sky voice stating that in Mahakal forest, a Shivalinga is present and whoever finds its top and bottom is the creator. Lord Vishnu went to the underworld and Lord Brahma went towards the sky to search. But they could not find its top or bottom. So they named it as Anadikalpeshwar. Whoever worships this Linga, will be freed from all the sins and reaches heaven after death.
