History

Once all the Devas and Devathas were worshipping Goddess Parvathi. But Bhrugirit, a follower of Lord Shiva refused. Goddess Parvathi consoled him that he is like her son and will not be benefited only by worshipping Lord Shiva. But, he did not accept her words and offered meat to Goddess Parvathi with the power of his education and went back to Lord Shiva. Angered by this, Goddess Parvathi cursed him that he will wander on the Earth. Due to that curse, Bhrugirit fell on the Earth. There he performed penance for salvation. Lord Shiva said to him that, only Goddess Parvathi can save him, so worship her. Overjoyed by his penance, he said him to worship the Shivalinga at Mahakal forest to turn his mind into good mind. Bhrugirit went to Mahakal forest and worshipped the Linga. Then Goddess Parvathi erupted from that Linga and the half- Parvathi and half- Shiva freed him from his curse. Bhrugirit asked for a boon that the Linga he worshipped, should be known as Akrureshwar. Whoever worships this Linga will be freed from all their sins and will reach Heaven after death.
