Architecture & History

Once when Sage Agasthiyar came to south during the wedding of Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva asked Sage Agasthiyar to convert a Lord Vishnu statue as Linga to see the wedding of Lord Shiva from there. The Kutralam temple was then a Lord Vishnu temple. When Sage Agasthiyar came to Kutralam, he was not allowed to enter the temple being a saivate. Sage Agasthiyar then proceeded to Ilanji made linga out of white sand and worshipped Lord Shiva there. Lord Muruga appeared before him and explained him the 28 Agamas and asked Sage Agasthiyar to go to Kutralam as Vaishnavaite and then convert the Lord Vishnu statue as Linga. Thus Lord Shiva was called here as 'Iruvaaluga Nathar'. This temple was supposed to be built by Kulasekara Pandian during 1409.
