Abodes of Navagraha

Sukran (Venus)

According to Hindu mythology, Shukra is the son of Sage Bhrigu and Kavya Mata. Sukra is the guru of Asuras, the demons and is also referred as Shukracharya. There is also another version that Venus, the master and teacher of Demons (Asura Guru), resided and meditated inside the stomach of Lord Shiva for 1000 years. Then Lord Shiva ejected Venus into the world as a live being. He was granted the status of a planet, because he stayed inside Lord Shiva’s physical body for many years. Sukra is portrayed with four hands and seated on a white lotus. He holds a stick, beads, lotus. Sometimes, He is portrayed holding bow and arrow and standing with a white horse. The gemstone attributed to Venus is Diamond. It is most appropriate to worship Sukra with white lotus, jasmine and white scented flowers. Field bean / leema bean (Mochai) is the favorite offering for Venus. He serves as an example of the ideal teacher who was a source of infinite knowledge. He did not differentiate between his students and treated everyone the same. Therefore, he spread his wisdom to whoever sincerely sought it. According to Hindu mythology, the original name of Shukracharya was Ushana. There is an interesting story behind calling him Shukra. Once, Ushana robbed lord Kuber of his wealth. Kuber is the Hindu god of wealth and finance. This agitated Lord Shiva, and therefore, he went to punish Ushana with his spear. Ushana used his powers and sat on Shiv Ji’s spear, which made lord Shiva bend his spear like a bow. Therefore, he swallowed Ushana and trapped him in his stomach. Ushana pled for a long time which made lord Shiva release him through semen. Shukra means semen or sperm in Sanskrit. Therefore, this gave Ushana the name Shukracharya. He is also known as the son of lord shiva because he emerged from his stomach. The guru of Asuras was originally born to a sage. Therefore, he went to Rishi Angrias for his education when he grew up. Rishi Angiras also had a son whose name was Brihaspati. Both the pupils were equally brilliant. But because Brihaspati was the son of Agiras, he had a natural favour. This made Shukra feel like the Devloka did not value him enough. Therefore, he went to the Daitya Loka, the Asuras’ land. This is how he became the supreme teacher and the Guru of Asuras.According to the story, Bali was a student of the guru of Asuras. He was also a devout believer of Lord Vishnu. However, Bali was a little highheaded. Lord Vishnu came to him in the form of Vaman to teach him a lesson. Vaman was a dwarf Brahmin and asked for three steps of land from Bali.Guru Shukracharya knew that it was Lord Vishnu all along. Therefore, he tried to stop Bali from giving the land, but it went in vain. To complete the donation, Bali had to pour water from a Kamandal. Shukra entered the Kamandal to stop the water from falling, but Lord Vishnu was aware of this. Therefore, he poked the Kamandal with a grass blade which made Shukra lose his eye.
