Location

It is one of the two temples in Trichy. The other one being Rock fort temple. One part of Trichy is Uraiyur. There are plenty of local buses to Uraiyur. This temple is situated in the market place in Uraiyur. Uraiyur was the capital of early Chola Dynasty.

History

Once when Chola King Veeravadhithan was riding on an elephant His elephant suddenly became mad. Lord Shiva appeared as a Hen and pocked the elephant on its head and made it calm. Thus this place was called as "Kozhiyur". The another legend for this temple is Lord Shiva appeared in five colors for the times of poojas in a day to Saint Udhangar. Lord Shiva also revealed the five colors to Lord Bramha here.
