The Sacred Legend (Sthala Purana)
Legend tells that Kamadeva, the God of Love, lost his bodily form to the fiery gaze of Lord Shiva's third eye. He performed intense penance to the Divine Mother atop Nilachal Hill, regained his handsome form (Kama-rupa), and constructed the earliest sanctum of Kamakhya in profound gratitude.
